Four Things to Do to Help your Seniors Get a Good Night’s Sleep

As seniors add more years to the age, their body requires more time to recharge and recover by getting adequate sleep every night. Sleeping allows the body to get rid of harmful toxins which result in memory loss, reduced energy levels and compromised immune systems. Family members who are taking care of an aging loved one must encourage the latter to sleep more at night. Encourage them to Stay Physically Active at Daytime

Ensuring that your senior is active during the day is important to use up their energy and feel tired at night. Moderate exercise such as walking and stretching can already make a difference in their ability to sleep at night. Depending on their capability, your senior may be able to take part in activities such as hiking, dancing and swimming.

Set the Temperature in their Bedroom at a Comfortable Level

Older adults who are too cold or hot during the night might have a disturbed sleep or problem sleeping at all. Because of this, you must ensure their bedroom temperature is comfortable enough for them. Consider heating or cooling the house or their bedroom two hours before the bedtime. They should be able to tell you the temperature they desire. A comfortable bedroom temperature will promote a good sleep at night.

Don’t Serve Fluids Before Bedtime

Sometimes, your senior loved one may need to take several trips to the bathroom at night. Bladder problems can disrupt their sleep. To prevent this, ensure your loved one doesn’t take fluids close to bedtime.

Discourage Too Much Time on the TV

Televisions, along with other home electronics, can prevent your loved one from getting the right amount of sleep they should get at night. Also, it is best to limit electronics for the entire family at night as these devices can have loud sounds and brightness which can be startling for them.  Make sure you turn off all electronic devices two hours before your loved one’s bedtime.
